President Lyndon B. Johnson, then President Nixon and Gov. Reagan, prioritized fighting a “drug scourge” that no longer affected just society’s fringe, but also middle-of-the-road taxpayers’ own children. ALD-52 is a bit of a fringe psychedelic, which means it’s almost never explicitly mentioned on the lists of controlled substances for most countries. Therefore, ALD-52 may be legal in countries that don’t have laws banning all lysergamides, new psychoactive substances (NPS), or analogs of currently prohibited substances. If using the drug two days in a row, you’d need to take a significantly higher dose on the second day in order to make up for this tolerance.

Mushrooms
I met them a few times, and they were like, ‘You’re nice, but we’re not interested in telling you our story.’ They were fiercely protective,” Kirkley said. Three years later, after persistent efforts on Kirkley’s part, a relationship with Mike and Carol blossomed and their interviews solidified the legitimacy of the film. Today, books saved from the water tell a story of loss and resistance. Seeking privacy, some of the Brotherhood moved inland to a ranch near Idyllwild, to create a couples-only commune led by Leary, who declared that he and Griggs were ‘agents of God’, born to lead ‘a new breed’.
How Fast Does ALD-52 Turn Into LSD?
My second lab in Denver was the one that got busted by federal agents while I was off getting materials and equipment. That felt really scary and they eventually caught up with me and had to go to court proceedings for that, looking at possibly 56 years in jail. There were more people taking bad drugs, more people behaving badly. People like Charles Manson who were taking acid, going out, and murdering people.

ALD-52 gained public notoriety when it was supposedly distributed as LSD in the 1960s under the now-famous name “Orange Sunshine.” This was later disproven (see section below). 1-Acetyl-N,N-diethyllysergamide (also known as ALD-52, 1-Acetyl-LSD, 1A-LSD, 1A-LAD, and mistakenly as Orange Sunshine) is a lesser-known psychedelic substance of the lysergamide class that produces LSD-like psychedelic effects when administered. It’s structurally related to psychedelic lysergamides like LSD and 1P-LSD and is reported to produce largely indistinguishable effects. In December 1968 Nick Sand, an LSD chemist from The Brotherhood of Eternal Love in Orange County, California, purchased, through an intermediary, a farmhouse in Windsor, California, where he and Tim Scully set up a large LSD lab.
- Customers enjoy the story of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and its quest to spread peace, love, and acid in the 1960s, with one customer noting it’s full of twists and turns.
- It’s converted in the liver to LSD, which then exerts the characteristic psychedelic effects.
- In protesting the prohibition, the Human Be-In was fuelled by LSD – acid was taken in such quantities that the Hells’ Angels were asked to run the crèche.
- He was a laid-back, loved-up, long-haired prototype of Breaking Bad’s Walter White.
- He fuelled the Summer of Love in 1967 and dreamed of taking the whole world on an acid trip to peace.
- It was to be found in the final novel, Island, of the grand philosopher of psychedelics, Aldous Huxley.
There exists, to this day, a direct line between the LSD manufactured in inconspicuous, illegal clandestine chemistry operations and ongoing clinical trials, authorized amid the ongoing renaissance in psychedelic science. With slight tweaks and modifications, Owsley acid has passed from chemist to chemist, from underground to the pharmaceutical mainstream, like a grape-bearing vine safeguarded by generations of vintners. It has been synthesized, transmuted, and safeguarded for decades, by a family tree of gifted outlaw chemists using tried-and-true methods developed in home labs across the Bay Area since the mid-1960s. It has been shepherded across generations, binding an expansive, wiggly community of artists, chemists, criminals, rock stars, researchers, and good ol’ fashioned heads. It was the namesake of Augustus Owsley Stanley III, as eccentric a figure as has ever proweled the American underground. Wiry, furry, and proudly carnivorous, he also answered to “Bear.” He was ostensibly known for his work as an audio engineer, having designed sound systems for the Grateful Dead.
“Dropping Acid” Or “Drop Acid”
ALD-52 contains a N,N-diethylcarboxamide functional group bound to R8 of the chemical structure. It is additionally substituted at carbon 6 with a methyl group. It is well worth a viewing if you are interested in drug culture, the 1960’s, psychedelia and 20th Century American history. The documentary did a wonderful job with pacing and shining a light on the personalities and renegade aspects of the two men behind story, while not getting too bogged down with pro-hippie nostalgia or anti-government commentary. Even the soundtrack branched out in refreshing ways, avoiding the Jefferson Airplane “White Rabbit” and Jimi Hendrix “Purple Haze” trappings one would expect. DoubleBlind is a trusted resource for news, evidence-based education, and reporting on psychedelics.
Drugs that come in powder or tablet form carry a much higher risk of causing overdose from these substances than lysergamide-based blotter paper doses. ALD-52 is considered slightly weaker than LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) when used at the same dose. The effects of ALD-52 take longer to kick in, which makes the come-up much easier to handle, especially for new users. However, as with LSD and psychedelics in general, it is possible that ALD-52 can act as a potential trigger for those with underlying psychiatric conditions. The toxicity and long-term health effects of recreational ALD-52 use do not appear to have been studied in any scientific context and the exact toxic dose is unknown.

Timothy Leary: Books, Lectures, & LSD
The best way to express this high-minded idealism was by mass-producing extremely potent, extremely pure LSD, almost as if its non-dilution was an expression of their own virtue. Part of the reason for this is because it’s not well known; most people are familiar with LSD but don’t yet know there’s a whole category of related compounds offering similar effects (lysergamide psychedelics). In the United States, ALD-52 isn’t specifically mentioned on the list of prohibited substances.
Acid Slang
For those already immersed in the cannabis world, this revival might seem familiar. The journey from taboo to treatment is something cannabis users know well. Just as compounds like THCa are now being studied for their potential medical benefits, psychedelics are undergoing a similar transformation.

Most of the physiological changes occur as a byproduct of the cognitive effects. For example, ALD-52 can cause users to feel anxious, especially during the come-up. This results in physical changes such as increased blood pressure or heart rate. ALD-52, along with other members of the lysergamide class, are among the strongest psychedelics known.
As fate would have it, police raided Scully’s Denver lab in 1968, and while he managed to escape arrest, he was out of a lab. Sand agreed to finance a new lab for producing LSD in exchange for Tim Scully’s knowledge of Owsley Stanley’s process. The nickname “The Alchemist” was a nod to Sand’s ability to turn base materials into something valuable, much like the legendary alchemists of ancient times who sought to transmute lead into gold. In response to the growing rebellion of young people, President Richard Nixon declared Timothy Leary “public enemy number one” for his encouragement of drug use and outlawed LSD in 1966, which meant Sand would have to go underground to continue his work. He eventually moved his lab to the basement to scale production but was forced to move it again after a chemical fire.
Drugs In Development
Benjamin Ramm looks at the books and ideas that shaped the group. Two micrograms per kilogram of LSD-25 was administered intravenously to five normal human subjects. The concentration of drug in plasma was determined serially over the subsequent 8 hours. LSD-25 was found to be present in human plasma in relatively large quantities during the period of peak effect. The half-life of LSD-25 in human plasma was calculated to be 175 min.
This lab produced STP on a commercial scale which he sold to the Hells Angels. The lab closed suddenly in July 1968 after police started knocking on his door. The following year, Scully and Don Douglas set up the first Denver Lab, expecting Stanley to bring his remaining lysergic acid. There’s no lack of incident to this stranger-than-fiction tale, from the Brotherhood’s close relationship with psychedelic guru Timothy Leary (they were directly involved in later breaking him out of prison) to one major character’s tragic death by overdose. As the law-enforcement noose tightened, most principals were able to scatter before a large-scale raid finally occurred.
They became friends and Billy loaned Scully $12,000 for the second Denver lab in 1968. His lab assistants were arrested there when they returned a few days later. The search was eventually ruled illegal and the case was dropped,4 but the lab had cost approximately $25,000 to set up and now Scully was looking for a new lab in addition to precursor chemicals.

When Owsley Stanley’s LSD California lab was shut down by federal agents, Sand and Scully stepped in, driven by their beliefs that acid could save the world. At Millbrook, Sand experienced his first LSD trip and was introduced to George Gurdihieff’s writing. By the late ’50s, samples were sent out to psychiatrists for medical research. The CIA examined the possibility of using the drug as a truth serum during the Cold War. “If we could turn on everyone in the world, then maybe we’d have a new world of peace and love.
Scully set up the new lab in the basement of a house across the street from the Denver zoo in early 1967. 100,000 tablets (270 micrograms each) of Monterey Purple were made in Denver for the Monterey Pop Festival. Later Owsley started to tablet more of the product in Orinda, California but was arrested before he completed that work. Owsley and Scully also produced a hitherto uncommon psychedelic amphetamine in Denver which they called STP. Owsley and Scully made trial batches of 10 mg tablets and then STP mixed with LSD in a few hundred yellow tablets but soon ceased production of STP.
