Why are these markets still seen as enticing places to sell drugs, despite the risks? To find out, our recent study surveyed 13 darknet drug vendors, via online encrypted interviews. These markets host hundreds, or in some cases thousands, of people who sell drugs, commonly referred to as “vendors”. JCODE also targets the trafficking of weapons and other illicit goods and services on the internet. The seizures, to which ICE Homeland Security Investigations significantly contributed, include more than $200 million in currency and digital assets, over two metric tons of drugs, comprised of 144 kilograms of fentanyl or fentanyl-laced narcotics, and over 180 firearms. In addition, the United States and international law enforcement partners made 270 arrests of dark web vendors, buyers, and administrators in Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Sales are hard to measure with certainty on darknet markets, but by checking customer feedback with specialist software it is possible to estimate trends. Several of the UK’s biggest online drug vendors have maintained positive feedback on around 1,000 to 2,000 sales monthly since January.
Another important source of information is the trading cash flow, which is recorded in the block chain and might contribute to a comprehensive view of the supply-demand relationship. We did not include such analyses due to the time and scope constraints, and it is a topic that we plan to investigate further.
